Kuwait expects to start imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by the end of August, a senior oil official said on Wednesday.
The terminal, which was expected to receive an LNG cargo from Shell, is undergoing the commissioning stage, Assad al-Saad, deputy chairman of state refiner Kuwait National Petroleum Co (KNPC) said.
"We are still in the commissioning stage and when we finish we will start the (off)loading," he said. "During commissioning there is loading but at a lower... rate. It's still a trial."
One of the first liquefied natural gas tankers expected to offload at Kuwait's newly completed Mina Al-Ahmadi terminal has been diverted to India, according to AISLive ship tracker on Reuters.
Last month, state run Kuwait Petroleum Corp signed a deal with Royal Dutch Shell to import LNG needed from power generation starting this summer.
Kuwait, the world's fourth-largest oil exporter, has failed to keep up with rapidly growing domestic demand for gas for power plants.
It has built import facilities to receive gas during summer months, when power demand peaks with the need for air conditioning to temper soaring desert temperatures. (Reuters)
