Oman invites bids for steam oil production project

State-run Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) is inviting bids for one of the country's biggest enhanced oil recovery projects, the company's website and officials said on Monday.

According to officials, the two Amal fields, in the East and West, could produce up to 60,000 barrels per day (bpd) when the project comes online.

The project will involve building integrated surface facilities required for large-scale steam production.

"The steam injection project, once completed in 2012, will increase production at Amal three times from the current 20,000 bpd," a PDO official told Reuters.

Amal has been producing oil by conventional methods since 1984.

But the heavy oil is limiting the rate of production, as well as the percentage of the oil in place that can ultimately be recovered, according to a PDO bulletin.

Part of the contract is to build and install a single steam-generation facility for both fields, two production trains, a power station, pipelines and aquifer pumps, the website said.

The closing date of submission for the bids is February 7 2010 and the contract award is expected on June 30 2010.

Oman has spent heavily on new technology to enhance oil output from its old, depleted fields. It aims to boost total crude and oil condensate output to 805,000 bpd in 2009, up from 757,000 in 2008. (Reuters)
