State oil refiner Kuwait National Petroleum Co (KNPC) plans to shut a 120,000 barrels per day crude unit at the Mina al-Ahmadi refinery for maintenance at the end of October, a KNPC official said on Wednesday.
The maintenance for the crude processing unit is slated to start on Oct. 27, and will last until Nov. 16, KNPC spokesman Mohammed Mansour al-Ajmi said.
The 460,000 bpd Mina al-Ahmadi is the country's largest oil refinery with three crude processing units.
KNPC has built up stocks to guarantee delivery to buyers during the shutdown, he said.
"We have enough stocks. This is a scheduled (maintenance) and we have planned for it," he said.
KNPC also plans a total shutdown for its ageing 200,000 bpd Shuaiba refinery, the country's smallest, in the first half of 2011 for 40 days, Ajmi said.
"This is a periodic shutdown. Shuaiba management does it every five years," he said, adding the maintenance was expected to be around March-April.
KNPC runs the OPEC exporter's three oil refineries which have a combined capacity of around 930,000 bpd. Kuwait is the world's fourth-largest oil exporter. (Reuters)
