FLU BATTLE: Salmaniya Hospital in Bahrain has expanded its capacity to deal with serious swine flu cases.

Bahrain's main hospital has expanded its capacity to deal with swine flu victims as the Gulf state reported its second H1N1 related fatality.

Bahraini Mousa Jassim Al Taitoon, 24, died at 3.10am on Wednesday due to acute respiratory failure, health officials announced.

Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) has since expanded its capacity to receive serious cases, chief of medical staff Dr Mohammed Al Awadhi said in comments published by Gulf Daily News on Thursday.

The number of beds has been increased by allocating a ward as a support facility in case the numbers of serious cases rises, he told the paper.

"Special isolation beds will also be allocated for newborns at the Children's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) if the mothers test positive for the flu," he added.

He said there were 29 beds for serious flu cases from the ICU and the ward.

Separately, schools in Bahrain have been directed to set up special isolation rooms to combat the threat of the infection spreading among students as they returned from the summer break.

This is great.. so on H1N1, question is how will they do it? With what Biosafe facilities will they test thousands of people if need be? Only Mobile units can expand services at the speed and size required for this emergency.. and thats not being done..
