UAE telco Etisalat confirmed on Saturday that its Al Shamil customers are to be offered the chance to try a higher speed for Internet access for two months at no additional cost. The offer runs through November 30th.
For upgrade to the highest speeds of 8Mbps and 16Mbps, customers will require FTTH (Fibre to the Home) connectivity, however.
Post the offer period, customers can choose to continue with the higher speed packages, (chargeable from the third month onwards), selectively upgrade their speeds from the various available packages, or revert to their existing package, depending on their upgrade experience and requirements.
Customers can inquire about their FTTH connectivity by visiting any business centre and can upgrade their existing packages by calling 101 or visiting any Etisalat sales office.

The situation in KSA was worst than here but people there were smarter I'd say
They made publication and even dedicated a website to show their operaters schemes and ask for the rights
Now even Etisalat's own company there have less prices than in their home country
Making at least one website and writing articles on the local newspapers should at least raise people awarness and attract the wanted attention from those who can do something.
Just complaining in the alleys won't do anything

i pay the same price for 64K internet line in Dubai right now, as I pay for a 3MB line in the States.
how can they call it broadband when it is just unlimited slow-band?
while i could pay more to the price-gouging companies in Dubai, i will not because i do not want to line their pockets anymore than absolutely necessary. YES, it is a painfully slow speed to use the web, but it is still internet and all the people shelling out 4-6 times the reasonable rate should not complain because you are the reason they are ripping us off!!!
in at least 5 other countries which I lived in over the past 10 years, when a provider increased their maximum bandwidth, the lower speed increased as well, but remained at the same price. Du and Etisalat will have 64K speed around until 2050 if they can, because this is the bulk of the users. They want us to pay dearly for 4MB, 8MB, 16MB speeds, so they double the speed of those bandwidths while keeping the price of the old 2MB, 4MB, 8MB lines. Did they double the speed of the 64K, 256K, 512K while keeping the rates from 1.2 the speed? No. Cuz they want to keep ripping us off and make it ever more painful. Newsflash!!!! 64K should be called dial-up or ISDN, NOT broadband!!! It should not even be called broadband if the speed is less than 1MB.

Please dont be under any ilusion that DU is offering any where near like a reasonable service. They may make the initial conection correctly but if you have any cause to query your bill or request changes to you package...forget it...you may as well bang your head against a brick wall.
I was being charged someone elses telephone charges for a perod of around six months last year when I went to query this with the customer service centre I was told that I had to raise a complaint with their finance dept which does not have face to face communications only reachable by telephone....it took a further six months to clear up...constant phone calls having to explain and re-explain to the semi literate employees...what an absolute joke...not fit to run a communications business....they can't communicate
This is why they do not open the telco market up, if any half decent company entered the country they woiuld totally wipe these companies off the map.

I don't think paying 350AED for an 8mbps is such a bad thing. I used to pay 250AED for a sad 1mbps just 2 years ago, so putting things in perspective, things are indeed evolving, and your theory about providers not having incentive to improve doesn't seem quite accurate. Maybe they do NOT have incentive YES..but things are improving nonetheless.
Regarding the direct problem on hand, the connection itself is sufficient from either provider. This was never an issue. The issue is customer service and IT competency. I would say the connection is much better from DU though.
The problem is that they are holding on to their old prices that it isnt funny anymore. an 8mbps for 350AED while a 1mb for 250AED???
obviously they are pushing people to go for the higher speeds..but will they then dip their prices for the slow ones or will they just cancel them from their list?
This is part of the problem...some people simply need 1mbps and there should come a time when they have to pay 75AED max for it...but will that day come?
