More than 150 Kuwaitis laid off by the private sector amid the global economic crisis have so far received benefits through the government's new initiative.

Kuwait's Manpower and Government Restructuring Programme announced that the number of axed workers who met the criteria for receiving unemployment benefits hit 155 last week.

"Those persons have received a total of KD105,000 from state funds so far," the programme's acting secretary-general Fawzi Al-Majdali told reporters.

"The programme will distribute more funds to the eligible persons in the coming few days in a bid to alleviate the financial burdens and social suffering of the axed workers," Al-Majdali added.

The cabinet has decreed that any Kuwaiti worker who was dismissed by their employers between August 1, 2008, and December 31, 2009, will be eligible for unemployment benefits equal to 60 percent of their basic salary in addition to KD220 a month.

He also thanked the National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) and the Gulf Bank for their support in finding alternative jobs for the axed workers.

Al-Majdali appealed for the national institutions and the local firms to "work with the programme, help reemploy the axed workers and satisfy the labor market needs".

What abt Expats? Don't THEY get any benefits? Even though they PAY taxes, indirectly OR directly? Not that the govt can GUARANTEE them new Jobs, but I think there should be SOME sort of an equal treatment for ALL people who lose their jobs. Expats ALSO seem to be working, like anyone else, and yet, they just get KICKED out of the country for being jobless! Trend in ALL of teh GCC.... isn't it??
