ON TRACK: Construction work on the Asian Beach Games site in Oman is progressing well, Omran said.

The number of construction workers at the Asian Beach Games site in Oman is expected to rise to 2,500 over the coming months to ensure the project is completed to deadline.

Currently, 1,800 labourers are employed on site by developer Omran but the number will increase across three shifts in a bid to hand over the development in July 2010, ahead of the Games in December.

Work was currently on schedule across all areas of the project which started in June 2008. Omran said.

Overall marina works were 77 percent complete while the permanent structures are also starting to take shape with the marina apartment buildings, hotel, Games command centre and athletes village ahead of schedule, said company CEO Wael Al Lawati.

Infrastructure works and work on landscaping have also begun and are scheduled to be delivered in July 2010 and April 2010 respectively, he added.

The progress was reported at a special meeting of the Asian Beach Games Steering Committee to check progress on the site.

Al Lawati added: "We are very proud to confirm that we are fully on schedule to complete site works on time. This meeting is an excellent demonstration of our commitment to pressing ahead with this crucial project that will become a cherished community in its own right long after 2010."

The Muscat Asian Beach Games will be the second following the inaugural event in Bali in 2008, with athletes, officials, media and volunteers from 45 counties expected to participate.

The one million square metre site in Musannah features Olympic-quality sporting facilities, an athlete's village, a four star hotel, a 400-berth marina, a range of restaurants and retail facilities, plus a bespoke man-made lagoon for the Games' water-based events.
