Qatar Airways could launch daily flights to Tokyo early next year, an official at the Japanese Embassy in the Gulf state has said.
The move is being considered as a new runway is set to become operational at the Narita International Airport by March next year, said Ryoji Iwama, counsellor and deputy head of mission at the Japanese Embassy, in comments published by The Peninsula on Tuesday.
He told the paper that the Embassy was hoping the daily Tokyo flight will be launched early next year.
“The airline currently operates daily flights to Osaka, but this new move will further develop aviation relations between Qatar and Japan,” said Iwama.
Qatar Airways currently flies to Kansai International Airport in Osaka and will soon operate passenger flights to Narita International Airport after the launch of the new 2,500-metre runway, scheduled for March 2010.
Qatar Airways operates a fleet of 69 aircraft to 82 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, Middle East, Africa, South Asia, Far East and North America. The airline has outstanding orders for more than 220 aircraft worth more than $40 billion.
