Qatar's $2.19bn motorway project faces further delays

Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) is said to have cancelled contracts of at least two developers working on the QR8bn ($2.19bn) Doha Expressway, it has been reported.

Sources told the Gulf Times that one of the firms was the Germany-based Bilfinger-Berger, the main contractor of the Doha Expressway/22 February Street, but this was not confirmed by the company.

Previous reports in the Arabic press said that work on this part of the ambitious road project had been suspended after a disagreement over payment between Ashghal and Bilfinger-Berger.

The Doha Expressway project is a 6km, three-lane dual carriageway, including underpasses, crossovers and four separate interchanges.

The total scheme includes 12 contracts of work and is part of wider road development plans that aim to connect north and south Doha and the city’s east and west.

The project was originally due to be completed in the second quarter of 2008. Following delays it is now due to be finished in March 2010.
