Bahrain paramedics demand H1N1 danger money

Paramedics in Bahrain are demanding danger money to handle suspected swine flu patients, health chiefs have confirmed.

Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) chief executive officer Dr Waled Al Ma'ana said the request had been made amid fear among frontline staff about catching the virus, Gulf Daily News reported on Thursday.

"We have sent a recommendation to the Civil Service Bureau based on our assessment of the situation and shall await their instructions," he told the paper.

Dr Al Ma'ana said the demand came after a Filipino paramedic was initially suspected to have contracted swine flu from a patient.

However, tests for the condition produced negative results.

Meanwhile, health authorities on Wednesday said the overwhelming majority of Bahrain's stocks of Tamiflu had a minimum expiry of five years.

Public Health Director Dr Khairya Moosa said only a "very limited" quantity of the drug had a December 2009 expiry date and these would be exhausted "within days", the report added.
