Sugar and confectionery were Dubai’s biggest food exports last year - making up 37 percent of the value of products leaving the emirate, new figures show.
Dubai exported around AED3.5bn of food in 2008 and re-exported AED4.1bn worth of goods, according to the Dubai Export Development Corporation.
The sweets and confectionery market is worth around AED300m and is growing at 10 percent a year.
The UAE currently imports 80 percent of food products. Over the past 15 years the country has invested $1.4bn (AED5.14bn) in food manufacturing to tap local and re-export markets.
Sweets Middle East, the first international exhibition for processing, manufacturing and packaging for the confectionery and snack industry, will take place at the start of November in Dubai.
