The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) is to promote the emirate as a tourist destination at the upcoming Leisure Moscow exhibition.

The exhibition, due to run from Sept 22-24, is being seen a platform for ADTA to raise its profile in the all-important Russian market.

A dedicated pavilion will promote hotels, including new properties on Yas Island - host to the Etihad Airways Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix - to tour operators and developers, WAM reported on Monday.

Mubarak Al Nuaimi, International Promotions Manager, ADTA said on Monday: "Last year more than 11 million Russians travelled overseas, with a majority of these at the luxury end of the marketplace.

''ADTA therefore views Russia and the CIS as a great emerging source market whose potential is still largely untapped.''

''With our national airline Etihad operating regular flights from Moscow and the Belarusian capital of Minsk; and with Ukrainian International Airlines launching flights from Kiev to Abu Dhabi, Russian and CIS accessibility to the emirate is vastly improved and we must maximise the opportunity,'' he added.

Al Nuaimi also noted that almost one third of the Russian outbound market is accounted for by business tourism - an area of strength for Abu Dhabi.

Russia is among several new markets currently under study by ADTA, which is looking to raise its international profile and expand its overseas office network next year in a move to extend its marketing reach.
