Omani health officials confirmed a further three deaths from swine flu on Wednesday, bringing the total number of deaths from the H1N1 virus in the country to 16.
The latest cases were a 49-year-old cancer patient, a 50-year-old woman suffering from obesity and asthma and a 60-year-old patient, who was brought late to hospital to receive treatment.
Meanwhile, officials have cancelled the Muscat Festival 2010 due to the swine flu threat, according to a report in the Oman Times.
The festival, the biggest event in Oman, is held for a month every year and attracts more than two million visitors.
“Muscat Festival being a major event is attended by thousands of visitors from different countries and we think relevant measures that could reduce gatherings at public venues to ensure health and safety of members of society should be taken,” said Sultan bin Hamdoun Al Harthy, chairman of Muscat Municipality in a statement to the Oman News Agency (ONA).
