The number of Filipinos working in Qatar could rise significantly as a result of a bilateral labour agreement between the two countries, a top official has said.
Philippine Ambassador to Qatar Crescente Relacion has targeted at least 90,000 work visas by the end of 2009 for Filipinos who want to work in the Gulf state.
That would bring the total number of available Filipino work visas to 120,000 this year, Relacion said in comments published by The Peninsula on Thursday.
Relacion said the Philippine Embassy has been closely working with the Philippine Overseas Labour Office in Qatar to speed up the processing of work visas to meet the target by the end of the year.
There are more than 200,000 Filipinos working in Qatar, the third largest number among expatriates after Nepalese and Indians, the report added.
