Man City sucker punched by late Michael Owen goal

A Michael Owen goal six minutes into injury time was enough to see Manchester United overcome Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City in a seven goal thriller at Old Trafford.

City appeared to have earned a point after Craig Bellamy equalised with five seconds left in normal time - its third equaliser after United’s Darren Fletcher had scored in the 80th minute.

City and England midfielder Gareth Barry levelled after an early Wayne Rooney strike before Fletcher restored United’s lead in the second half with the first of his two goals.

United kept City goalkeeper Shay Given busy who ensured the Eastlands club remained in the game.

With time running out a mistake by United’s England defender Rio Ferdinand led to Martin Petrov playing a through ball to Craig Bellamy who clinically slotted past Foster.

With officials adding on an extra four minutes, City manager Mark Hughes was understandably incensed when six minutes into added time Michael Owen sealed the three points for United.

Man Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson told the BBC: ''We gave three goals away today. It could have been an embarrassment - we could have won 6-0 or 7-0 today.

''But in the end we still won one of the best Manchester derbies. We have a neighbour, and sometimes neighbours are noisy, but we showed our power today and we get on with life.''

Elsewhere, Chelsea secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Tottenham in a game that turned after Spurs, 1-0 down, were denied a penalty after Robbie Keane was brought down in the box.

Everton meanwhile beat Blackburn 3-0, while Wolves beat Fulham 2-1.
