Abu Dhabi airport sees 2.5% passenger growth in Aug

AVIATION FIGURES: Abu Dhabi International Airport's busiest day last month was Aug 2.

Abu Dhabi International Airport saw increases in aircraft, cargo and passenger movements during August, according to the latest figures released on Sunday, but the rate of growth slowed.

The data by Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) showed that there airport saw a 12.4 percent rise in aircraft movements, compared to the same month last year.

Cargo was up 6.2 percent and passenger movements up 2.5 percent, compared to 10.3 percent in July.

The company said in a statement that the increase in aircraft movements was sue to the “significant number of new airlines establishing routes from Abu Dhabi in the previous 12 months, as well as established carriers launching new routes.”

Etihad Airways, the UAE’s national airline carrier, has launched new routes to Athens, Istanbul and Larnaca, as well as a service to Chicago.

India remained the airport's largest market with an overall increase in passenger traffic of 8 percent. Pakistan was second and the UK the airport’s third.

A total of 200,607 passengers travelled to the top five destinations, ADAC said. London was the most popular destination with 51,757 passengers, then Bangkok with 38,828 passengers.

The busiest day of the month was August 2 when a total of 32,090 passengers arrived, departed or travelled through the airport.

Ahmed Al Haddabi, senior vice president, airport operations, ADAC, said: "In spite of the current global slowdown in air transport, the strength of our economy and the commercial fundamentals of the Abu Dhabi market have ensured increasing demand."
