Kuwait may tighten its media laws following the closure of a TV channel that had been set up in the country by a Yemeni opposition leader.
Kuwait’s Ministry of Information is studying an amendment to the nation’s media law that would penalise content that could prompt sectarian strife, a source told UAE daily Al Bayan.
A report on the new law would be submitted to the government and would then have to be approved by the Gulf state’s parliament, he said.
The amendment would not limit media freedom in the country and the government believed in full freedom of speech, he added.
Earlier this year Kuwait shut down Suhail, a satellite TV channel that was reportedly funded by Yemeni politician and businessman Hameed Al Ahmar.
Sanaa officials had expressed concern that the station could adversely affect relations between the two countries, Al Rai newspaper wrote.
