Making the most of events season

Meetings and events play an important role in bringing together key industry figures and present an excellent opportunity to showcase the latest innovations and developments in the downstream sector.

The conference season is about to kick off, and every event organising company in the region is trying to capitalise on what they see as a lucrative petrochemicals market.

A series of events and conferences will be held in the region, whether in Saudi Arabia, the UAE or Qatar. No matter where the location is, they will be tackling the petrochemical industry as their main theme.

The events looming nearer in the calendar include the Growth, Innovation & Leadership Conference in Abu Dhabi, held during the first week of October. The fourth annual meeting of Petchem Arabia in Abu Dhabi will take place during the second week of October, while the Saudi PPPP 2009 exhibition and Saudi Petrochem in Riyadh and Dammam are held in the third week of October. Finally the mega Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) forum is to begin early in December.

Hundreds of seminars and workshops will be taking place, and many of them will be dedicated to the petrochemical sector.

Companies considering attending events should ask themselves the following questions: What are the benefits to be gained from these events and conferences? Can these forums represent value to the companies participating? Or can they just be a waste of time and of money?

Some conferences are eagerly anticipated, and the themes discussed are a real benefit to the industry, while others can merely repeat previously covered topics, with few fresh debates thrown up.

To avoid this repetition and to ensure the maximum benefits are gained from attending these events, I suggest that companies take a more active interest in their preparation.

By getting involved prior to the start of a show or exhibtion and recommending the subjects which would be most beneficial to the sector, petrochemical companies can ensure a day spent at an industry event is not a day wasted.

Abdelghani Henni is the editor of Petrochemicals Middle East.
