A major overhaul of Dubai taxi services could see more cabs on the city’s streets and an increase or decrease in fares, an official has said.
Mansoor Rhama al Falasi, acting director of the franchising and enforcement department at the Public Transport Agency, told the National, top priority of the 10 year plan was fares, regulations and driver training.
“This study will cover the supply and demand for the sector until 2020 and will look at the regulations, rules, and operational plans for franchise companies,” he told the paper.
“It will affect the guy on the street as it will make it easier for them to get a taxi.
“The consultant is also studying the customer and every single aspect of the system, including the intelligence system we have, for example, in our call centre.”
The plan is being put together by the consultants Booz & Co and is set to be handed to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) by the end of the year, with the first changed brought in during 2010.
Earlier this year, the RTA introduced a AED10 minimum taxi fare per journey and a starting fee of AED20 for journeys to Sharjah.
“We are going to have a review on those fares and maybe increase or decrease them. We are in the process of reviewing these,” al Falasi told the paper.
Last week the RTA announced it had fitted 3,503 taxis with a natural smelling deodorant after receiving complaints of smelly cabs .

Last time I was in London the Cabbies were complaining bitterly regarding the fact any one can do the job now - followed by a descriptive verb describing GPS systems- Perhaps they need to be introduced to the local cabs here - Plus if they increase any more - we can have one each - it keeps the Local car sale figures booming though!!!!

I've said this before, but the Dubai taxi wallahs need to learn their city better, and that should be part of their training. The London cabby is a breed in itself but their training is the best in the world and even the most obscure sub-lane in a mews maze can be found by the experienced ones. They spend months boning up on their knowledge before taking their first fare-paying passenger. This might account for why they are so expensive, but at least you get to your destination without going via Ouagadougou.
