SALES CALL: Councillors in Bahrain want all alcohol sales at the airport and duty free to be stopped.

Councillors in a Bahrain municipality which includes the country's international airport have called for a ban on all alcohol sales.

The call has been made by councillors in Muharraq, demanding that the government turn the Governorate into an alcohol-free zone.

The only places selling alcohol within the governorate are Bahrain International Airport, Bahrain Duty Free and the nearby Movenpick Hotel, Gulf Daily News reported on Thursday.

Their licences to sell alcohol should be cancelled and no new licences be issued within the governorate, said Muharraq Municipal Council.

The proposal will now go to Municipalities and Agriculture Minister Dr Juma Al Ka'abi, who has the power to veto the decision.

"Even if we can't get existing outlets to stop serving or selling alcohol, at least we can stop anyone in future from having such licence," Sameer Khadim, who presented the proposal, told the paper.

"Hopefully, the minister would take the right decision by having all outlets currently serving alcohol, including the Duty Free and the airport, banned, so we can have an alcohol-free Muharraq."

MPs voted during a session in May for a blanket ban on public sales of alcohol at Bahrain's hotels, restaurants, clubs and off-licences.

But they agreed to allow consumption in private homes, with suppliers providing home delivery.

The proposal is now being studied by the Cabinet, which has the power to reject it.

How backward and what a way to advertise ones self. Only locals and Saudis wll travel here if this goes ahead. Gulf Air may as well disband. Having been there several time for business and pleasure, I feel the small but pleasant country needs to open its doors to the world, not close them.
Might as well close down the airport!

There is absolutely no other purpose for having Bahrain's airport if they stop selling booze! How many people will want to transit there if those fridges full of glistening cold beers are removed? The Gulf Air lounge could be turned into a prayer room, and the Movenpick can be made into an ashram. What lulus are these councillors.
