2014 completion date for Saudi airport expansion

AIRPORT PLAN: Saudi officials plans to complete expansion work at Prince Muhammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah in 2014.

The first phase of a massive expansion project for the Prince Muhammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah will be completed in 2014, according to a senior figure.

Ala Samman, director general of Business Development and Properties at Domestic Airports, said the contract for the project would be awarded in October 2010.

In comments published by Arab News, Samman added that the project would increase the airport’s annual capacity to 30 million, mostly pilgrims coming for hajj and umrah.

He said the project would reduce the pressure on King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, the main gateway of pilgrims.

Samman said General Authority of Civil Aviation has taken into consideration the prospect of an increase in pilgrims over the next 30 years.
