Around 5,000 film lovers flocked to the opening night of the Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF) in Qatar on Thursday night, where they watched the Middle East premiere of Mira Nair’s biopic, Amelia.
People watched the Hollywood movie, which stars Hilary Swank and Richard Gere in the story of female aviator Amelia Earhart, in front of a specially constructed 24x10m screen.
It was the largest temporary structure ever to be built in Qatar, according to organisers.
The opening day of the festival saw stars such as Martin Scorsese, Mira Nair and Sir Ben Kingsley in attendance.
On Friday, screenings will start at City Center Cinemas, the beach at the Four Seasons and the MIA Gallery in the city.
Director Martin Scorsese will be on hand on Friday at the MIA for a special event, to view some of the one-minute films created this summer during DTFF’s educational workshops.
The festival will close on Sunday when Hollywood heavyweight and Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Robert De Niro arrives, fresh off the Los Angeles set of his latest film, a sequel to Meet the Parents.

How much did Qatar pay to Tribeca to be able to hoist the festival in Doha even censoring the movies in a film festival!?!?!?!
