R&B star Rihanna will be the headline act for a New Year’s Eve concert in Abu Dhabi, it was reported on Saturday.

The news will please thousands of fans who were left disappointed after the US singer pulled out of a planned concert in Dubai on May 28, citing personal reasons, UAE daily The National reported, without citing a source.

Rihanna would be the latest in a growing list of global music stars to grace the stage in Abu Dhabi, the latest being Beyonce on the first night of the city's Formula 1 celebrations.

Earlier this year, Coldplay also played the UAE capital.

The New Year’s Eve concert will be Rihanna’s first major performance since then, the paper said, adding that more details about the end of year concert and the location were expected to be released soon.

Rihanna has had a string of hits, including SOS, which was number one in the US, the more recently Umbrella, and the worldwide hit Don’t Stop the Music.

She has sold more than two million albums during her four-year career.

Last year, the Latin pop diva Shakira performed at a New Year’s Eve party at the Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi.
