Lewis Hamilton scorched around the Yas Marina circuit on Saturday to secure pole position for the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.
The British former world champion topped Saturday's qualifying session in his Mclaren Mercedes, ahead of Red Bull's Sebastien Vettel and Mark Webber. Newly crowned world champion Jenson Button is fifth on the grid for the race on Sunday, one behind his team-mate Rubens Barrichello.
Earlier, the qualifying provided some surprise results with former world champion Kimi Raikkonen unable to steer his way through the second session of qualification. The Ferrari driver, who is leaving the team after Abu Dhabi, failed to make the top 10 places for the pole position run off.
Jaime Alguersuari, Kazuki Nakajima, Heikki Kovalainen and Kamui Kobayashi joined him.
Former world champion Fernando Alonso provided the first shock of the qualifying session when he went out in the first round.
Renault's Spanish driver, who joins Ferrari for the 2010 season, unexpected went out with Giancarlo Fisichella, Romain Grosjean, Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Liuzzi.
"Hopefully tomorrow we can have a good race with plenty of overtaking manoeuvres. The track is quite wide so there should be places to get past people," Alonso told TV later.
