TRAFFIC RISE: Abu Dhabi International has seen a 7.5 percent increase in passengers during the first nine months of 2009.

Abu Dhabi International Airport recorded passenger growth of 7.5 percent for the first nine months of 2009, compared to the same period the previous year, according to the airport operator Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC).

The traffic figures were released by ADAC at the ACI World Annual General Assembly which opened in Kuala Lumpur.

The figures also showed a 6.8 percent passenger increase for the month of September.

Q3 passenger results were also in positive territory with a 6.4 percent increase.

Steady gains were also seen in cargo which rose two percent in the first nine months of the year while aircraft movements were up 8.3 percent over the combined three quarters.

“To date, we have already welcomed seven new carriers, in 2009, and with Malaysia’s Air Asia X becoming the eighth to start operations to Abu Dhabi later this month, we can be nothing short of pleased with the way the airport has maintained solid growth, despite difficult times for the industry globally,” said John Stent, acting chief of ADAC.
