The ruler of Dubai has urged officials to chase the Olympic dream for 2020, sayinf "nothing is impossible".
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of UAE, made his comments at the first meeting of the Supreme Organising Committee of the Working Group of Dubai 2020.
The meeting held at the Emirates Towers was chaired by the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, news agency WAM reported.
After launching in June his vision for Dubai 2020, which aims to build on social and economic progress for the region, Sheikh Mohammed directed the chairman and members of the group to "work as a one team to enable the UAE to win bids for Expo and the Olympics in 2020".
He added: "Nothing is impossible as long as we have the determination for change, not change of determination."
The Group members include Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of Abu Dhabi Civil Aviation Authority, Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation and head of the UAE Olympic Committee, Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, and several heads of government departments.
An executive sub-committee was formed to oversee plans for the Dubai 2020, WAM added.

Look what China did in 20 years and how they progressed. Dubai is doing it also, and being allowed to have some peace, many countries in the Middle East can progress much faster. Just let us have some peace, just for a few years.

I think one should use this approach everywhere. This is what Dubai does. Personally I don't think the bid will be successful, but they'll have great publicity and may succeed in some other event later on. That's what they do, aim for the moon, and collect some stars on your way.

If 'anything is possible' and you have the indoor ski slope, why not bid for the winter Olympics as well?

Dubai stands a very good chance to get Olympics. It seems they have been getting ready for it already for the last 10 years of more with the Metro, new highways, new airports, airlines, hotels, stadiums, etc. What else do you need for Olympics ? The weather should not be an issue as the dates are flexible and summer Olympics can even take place in Sep/Oct and that has been done before... best of luck to Dubai in its bid !
