Dubai's Floating Bridge to stay for 5 more years – paper

Dubai’s Floating Bridge that was built as a quick solution to reduce traffic congestion over the Dubai Creek, will stay till 2014, according to a report on Friday.

"We are reviewing the project and the Floating Bridge will not be removed for another five years until at least 2014," a top official at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) told the UAE-based Gulf News daily.

The Floating Bridge connects Riyadh Road, Dubai Courts and Creek Park on the Bur Dubai side with Baniyas Road, Deira City Centre and the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club on the Deira side.

The Floating Bridge has a capacity of 6,000 vehicles an hour, and was opened on 16 July 2007.

According to Gulf News, the bridge was built as a temporary solution to traffic congestion and it was to be replaced by the planned Seventh Crossing called ‘Dubai Smile' by 2012.

The bridge is open daily from 0600 (6 AM) to 2200 (10 PM). During off hours, the bridge is opened to allow boats to pass through.

"The bridge will stay for another five years due to review of the several existing road projects. The construction of the Seventh Crossing has been delayed but it will eventually be built to replace the Floating Bridge," the official told Gulf News.
