Kuwaiti healthcare facilities will be boosted by the launch of a $1.06bn hospital project which will provide more than 1,200 beds, the Gulf state's PM has said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah said the new Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital was a "source of boastfulness" to the country at a ceremony on Sunday.
He vowed that more development projects would be carried out and supervised "by sons of Kuwait in the coming stage", KUNA News Agency reported.
The new medical facility, which is slated for completion in 2013, will house specialised clinics and medical suites and will be equipped with sophisticated medical equipment, together with efficient and highly skilled staff, he added.
The project, which will take four years to finish, will include 1,268 beds and cost a total of KD303 million.
Separately, the Ministry of Public Works said it would sign five contracts worth KD15 million for the implementation of new projects, including Boubyan Port and Sheikh Jaber Bridge.
Fadhel Safar said the private sector would be involved in the execution of the projects that will be put out for tender.
He added that the new hospital project was a "rare national scientific and architectural edifice in the region".
