GROWTH PLANS: Oman Air has inked an agreement for five new aircraft.

Oman Air is looking to launch new routes, increase frequencies on existing services and develop its domestic flights, its chairman has said.

Ahmed Abdul Nabhi Macki, also Minister of National Economy and deputy chairman of Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council, was discussing the airline's purchase of five new aircraft from Embraer.

After announcing a deal to buy the Embraer 175 aircraft at the Dubai Airshow, Macki said: "The E-Jets are proven products in the Middle East, and the solid background Embraer has in the region was a key driver in our selection process.

"We are convinced that the E-Jets will be the ideal platform for increasing frequencies and developing new routes, as well as catering to our expanding domestic market."

Four of the jets will be operated by Oman Air and one will serve with the Royal Omani Police.

The deal also includes purchase rights for another five aircraft with the first delivery scheduled for the first quarter of 2011.

Frederico Fleury Curado, president and CEO, Airline Market, Embraer added: "It's a privilege to have our E-Jets chosen to play a significant part in the airline's strategy to develop air services both within and to and from the Sultanate of Oman. "

Oman Air's Embraer 175 will be configured with 72 seats, with 12 seats in business class and 60 in economy.
