Qatar is committed to developing a cleaner alternative to aviation fuels, Civil Aviation Authority chairman Abdul Aziz al-Noaimi said on Saturday.
Speaking during his opening address at Sky Blue – Arab Aviation Summit in Doha, the aviation chief said Qatar was leading many projects to reduce carbon emissions, including the development of gas-to-liquids (GTL) aviation fuel.
Qatar Airways made history in October by being the first airline to power a flight from London Gatwick to Doha on a fuel made of natural gas.
The new fuel burns is more environmentally friendly because it burns with lower sulphur dioxide and particulate emissions than pure conventional oil-based petroleum.
“It has been a century of great achievement in aviation engineering,” al-Noaimi quoted by the Gulf Times, told the conference.
“We are already well ahead of projections in the research of alternative fuel sources to support engineering advancements.
“Qatar, for one, is deeply committed to this cause and is a key research partner in gas-to-liquids (GTL) aviation fuel. In such areas of aviation research, Qatar has made great strides and is ahead of others,” he said.
Qatar is set to become the world’s leading producer of GTL kerosene when it is put into commercial production from 2012 at Pearl GTL, Ras Laffan Industrial City.
