Despite the economic downturn, business licences issued for the commercial sector in Dubai during 2009 rose by 76 percent in 2009, according to the latest figures released by the Dubai Department for Economic Development (DED).
Overall, the DED issued 11,635 licences for various businesses throughout last year, with issuances for the professional sector up by 22 percent, and for industry and tourism up by one percent each.
On the licence renewals side, DED reported an increase of two percent overall, with commercial renewals again increasing by 76 percent. Professional firm renewals rose by 20 percent, followed by industry (two percent) and tourism (one percent).
The DED also announced a 31 percent rise in commercial permits in 2009, and indicated that it had issued 157 licences for foreign firms, with British companies making up 21 percent of this number.
DED officers carried out a total of 74,181 inspections last year, resulting in 13,255 companies being fined.
A scheme devised by the department to encourage UAE nationals to set up businesses from home was also hailed as a success, with 1,691 licences issued during 2009.
