Arab Health 2007

by Michael Abong on Monday, 01 January 2007

Siemens

The world's population is growing, and in many nations aging dramatically. Both trends have already led to a powerful surge in the demand for healthcare products, services and solutions. To further ensure high-quality, patient-oriented and affordable healthcare under these circumstances, it will be crucial to fully realise all the efficiency potential in the total supply chain; from prevention and diagnosis, to treatment and patient care.

At Arab Health 2007, Siemens will showcase innovative products and solutions that address this challenge perfectly by improving the quality of care while reducing its costs. Key to success are trendsetting innovations for an earlier diagnosis and intervention, as well as powerful information technology to optimise processes across the whole healthcare continuum. Examples that will be on show include the Somatom Definition, the world's first Dual Source CT, which doubles temporal resolution and leads to an unprecedented image quality and speed. The brand new ultrasound systems Acuson X300 and X500 feature a flat panel design of newest technology and are suitable for daily clinical routine as well as for more complex cardio-vascular examinations, challenging 3D/4D examinations, paediatrics or internal medicine.

On the IT side, Siemens will show solutions including syngo WebSpace, a client-server computed tomography (CT) workplace solution. Addressing the need for rapid access to medical images, Siemens is the first CT manufacturer to provide a solution that turns office personal computers (PC) and laptops into CT workplaces, offering real-time access to CT data at a doctor's office and home - thus improving productivity, diagnosis capabilities and efficiency in the daily workflow. Information infrastructures like the HiMed Cockpit provide the patient with access to the internet, TV/radio, IP telephone and video-on-demand, as well as the ability to order food from the hospital menu or adjust room lights; all directly at the bed.

Because Siemens' expertise includes building, energy, security and communication technologies, the company will also be showing integrated turnkey projects. Meet us in Hall 3, stand 20.

GlaxoSmithKline

Thanks to the development of innovative vaccines, vaccination against cervical cancer will soon become a reality. Worldwide, every two minutes, a woman dies of cervical cancer. Overall, it is the second most prevalent cancer in women aged under 45 years worldwide. 80% of deaths from cervical cancer occur in the developing world where it remains the leading cause of cancer death in women. Without a significant improvement in the prevention of cervical cancer, by 2050, an estimated one million new cases will occur globally every year.

Cervical cancer is caused by persistent infection with cancer-causing types of human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV types 16, 18, 45 and 31 are collectively responsible for 80% of cervical cancers globally. The best possible vaccination against cervical cancer will combine the broadest coverage of oncogenic HPV types with the longest duration of protection.

During the GlaxoSmithkline symposium at Arab Health 2007, physicians will have an opportunity to interact with leading experts Dr Anne Szarewski and Dr Jennifer Smith, who will share their vast knowledge and experience on cervical cancer. They will update the audience on the scientific and technical challenges surrounding cervical cancer, in addition to the wider questions related to immunology, epidemiology and vaccination.

Every woman deserves protection. To find out more, visit GlaxoSmithKline on stand CE25.

Sonosite

SonoSite is the recognised market leader and innovator of hand-carried ultrasound, responsible for cost- effectively bringing compact, robust, high performance ultrasound instruments to the point of patient care.

Since the first products were shipped in 1999, SonoSite ultrasound devices have increasingly been used not only for traditional ultrasound markets, such as radiology and cardiology, but also for applications in areas like emergency medicine, anaesthesia and surgery. Their proven reliability and durability in conventional medical settings has also led to their use in far more challenging environments, such as conflict zones and rescue operations following natural disasters.

SonoSite is committed to further developing and enhancing its international business and has expanded its operational infrastructure in the Middle East, Africa, India and South East Asia over the past two and a half years, under the stewardship of Paul Williams as area director.

SonoSite has developed a range of user-friendly, technologically advanced hand-carried products designed from the ground-up, not adapted from existing technologies. For example, in the SonoSite MicroMaxx system, launched by SonoSite in 2005, a 128-channel beamformer, the complex front end of an ultrasound system, is integrated into four proprietary postage stamp-sized ASIC chips, something typically requiring several circuit boards in the larger systems.

Weighing less than 3.7 kg and the size of a notebook computer, the MicroMaxx ultrasound system delivers a unique combination of excellent image quality and portability, ideal for both hospital and consulting room settings. Its image resolution and performance is comparable to costly, conventional cart-based ultrasound systems weighing over 100 kg, but the MicroMaxx boots up in seconds, can operate on battery power for up to four hours, and is designed to withstand the rigours of mobile use. This system also comes with another industry first - a standard five-year warranty, which significantly reduces the cost of ownership for advanced imaging equipment in any user setting. This unique feature demonstrates the durability of SonoSite instruments and represents a further commitment to providing absolute value to our customers.

Anetic Aid

Leading supplier of operating theatre equipment, UK-based Anetic Aid, is set to showcase its latest products at the largest healthcare event in the Middle East; Arab Health 2007.

Used in more than 90% of hospitals across the UK, the QA3 is popular thanks to its use of the latest materials and manufacturing methods, including its super lightweight yet rigid construction. The versatile trolley is used both for patient transport in theatre and casualty areas, and also for examinations, intubations and radiography.

Roche Diagnostics

Roche Diagnostics is the worldwide market leader for in-vitro diagnostics. Since its founding as a division in 1968, Roche Diagnostics has grown continually to encompass the entire field of diagnostics.

In the Gulf region, Roche Diagnostics has been active through its appointed local distributors for more than 35 years. In promotional offices, which are established all over the countries of the GCC region, highly qualified scientific and technical staff are catering to all needs of modern hospitals and commercial laboratories. Most recently, Roche Diagnostics has established a regional GCC office in Dubai in order to further boost our services to customers.

Roche Diagnostics, being a world leader in the area of diabetes care, has been heavily involved in a patient education and awareness programme in the region. We have sponsored the Berger Education Program, a highly recognised education programme used in Germany and Europe for diabetics in order to enable them to better manage their condition. The program has been Arabized at the endocrinology department of the American University of Beirut in order to fit the food recipes and social habits of this region, and we are glad that it has been highly endorsed by key opinion leaders for implementation in the region.

Roche Diagnostics products from the Accu-Chek portfolio of meters and test strips also help diabetics to test their blood sugar any time, anywhere and hence control it at levels advised by their treating physicians. With its advanced technology, Accu-Chek makes testing simple, easy, handy and virtually free of pain.

Further examples for focuses of our work are:

• The introduction of automation in laboratories through Hitachi series, Integra, Modular and most recently Cobas 6000 systems, leading to a major shift in laboratory organisation and procedures. This has resulted in greater improvements in quality, accuracy and the speed of test results, which has assisted thousands of practitioners in making faster and more accurate decisions.

• The introduction of new tests for the identification of certain critical medical conditions that require urgent treatment such as Cardiac Troponin T for myocardial infarction, NTproBNP for heart failure, tumour markers or bone markers, that help clinicians to make the right decision in the diagnosis and treatment of their patient's condition.

• The introduction of PCR technology that allows an early detection of critical infections such as hepatitis and Aids by Cobas Amplicor, Cobas Taqman and Cobas Ampliprep systems.

• Most recently, the introduction of nucleic acid testing "NAT" technology for the screening of blood donations at blood banks that has opened up new possibilities to ensure only safe blood is used for blood transfusions.

ADAC-AmbulanceService

ADAC, founded in 1903, is the leading German and third largest automobile club worldwide. A recent survey shows that ADAC is one of the top-three brands among German enterprises with regard to trust and responsibility. As an extension for international medical services, in 1973 the ADAC-AmbulanceService came into existence.

With more than 30 years of experience, today ADAC-AmbulanceService is one of the most reputable European businesses for worldwide medical transport, with a dedicated competence centre for health-relevant tasks in connection with mobility and tourism.

In the Middle East, ADAC-AmbulanceService cooperates with Gulf Jet, a Dubai-based private aviation company. Both businesses have the same company philosophy of trust and quality. The partnership with Gulf Jet enables ADAC-AmbulanceService to deploy its large fleet more quickly and efficiently for medical transports from the GCC countries. Patients in Arab countries who are transported to Europe for medical treatment can rely on a better service as a result.

ADAC-AmbulanceService organises and carries out patient transport worldwide on ground and by air, including the transfer of intensive care patients in ADAC's own ambulance jets. Highly qualified medical staff specialised in emergency medical assistance, intensive care and flight medicine accompany these transfers.

The patient's relatives are looked after personally and our 30 ADAC physicians liase with local attending physicians to ensure optimum care for the patient.

ADAC-AmbulanceService attends to approximately 36,000 patients per year and carries out some 15,000 transports on ground and by air. Depending on the patient's diagnosis, air-bound transport may also involve additional transport options like stretcher, sleeper and PTC.

The ADAC fleet comprises Dornier-Fairchild 328-300 jets, Beechcraft Super King Air A350 and several Lear jets. Equipped with state-of-the-art intensive care facilities, they are very quiet, stable aircraft designed specifically to the highest hygiene standards for patient transport. Thanks to their size and flexibility, particularly Dornier-Fairchild 328-300 jets, the aircrafts also make it possible to transport the patient's next of kin.

SingaporeMedicine

A delegation of healthcare companies and leading doctors from Singapore will attend Arab Health to participate in the region's largest medical exhibition and conference and highlight the world-class facilities, delivery and care offered by the Southeast Asian state.

Singapore healthcare companies have been working with partners from the region and beyond to provide a holistic approach to healthcare development and delivery, from healthcare services, patient care, medical travel services, operational management, medical devices and equipment manufacturing, as well as healthcare technology.

Due to the advanced nature of the country's medical facilities, an increasing number of patients from the UAE and throughout the Middle East are travelling to Singapore for specialised treatment. More than 200 people seeking medical care from the Middle East visit Singapore each month, an increase of 20% over last year.

In 2005, a total of 374,000 international patients visited Singapore, an increase of 15% on the previous year.

Ranked by the World Health Organisation as having the best health system in Asia, the nation has first-rate health care with a multitude of specialised, expert treatments in key areas such as haematology, cardiology, ophthalmology and oncology.

"Singapore is at the forefront of medical care and has a world-class healthcare system offering the most advanced treatments by leading medical professionals," said Ke-Wei Peh, Area Director for the Middle East and Africa, Singapore Tourism Board.
