The Spin

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Sunday, 07 January 2007

The Spin's award for most bizarre festive greeting of the past fortnight goes to Halima Awaleh of web outfit thedubaiguide.com. "Seasons Greetings to you and may the New Year bring your hearts desires," reads the e-mail. "Thanks for all your support and patience during our launch and while we do Arabic and populating." Yeah, stuff like that, and things.

The Spin is hoping that the Khaleej Times has made a New Year's resolution to cease its baffling use of headlines. On the morning after the execution of Saddam Hussein, your favourite number one super soaraway fearless KT opted for the subtle and considered "Bang, bang in Baghdad". Nice.

Sharjah Airport in the UAE appears to have some unexpected expansion plans under way. According to its latest press release, the airport seems to be moving into the fruit business. "With the airport expansion well under way, the new Arrivals areas was the first unveiled surprise for passengers in August 2006, followed by the opening new Pear Area, where Arrivals and Departures passengers can experience the open lounges concept for the first time at the Airport." The Spin is not one for sour grapes, but he guesses the airline's PR team meant to say 'pier areas'. What a load of lemons.

The Spin loves Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel (above), where two moustachioed loons attempt to prove or disprove urban myths. It's the kind of show that everyone secretly likes but wouldn't dare admit it. However, fans were left aghast last week when it disappeared from the Showtime package, and migrated to rival Orbit. The pay TV network had issued a press release about this, but clearly the message hasn't reached all of its customers. One disgruntled Mythbuster told 7Days: "It's the reason I subscribed to Showtime." Another squealed: "I certainly won't be renewing my subscription." Showtime you have been 'busted'.

The Spin would like to applaud Ruwaad for what must be the longest teaser campaign ever seen in the UAE. Now, would someone kindly explain what it means?
