Sony Handycam HDR-SR1

Capturing your memorable family moments has never been easier with the SR1 – the world’s first high definition disc-based Handycam. According to Masaru Tamagawa, managing director of Sony Gulf, “once you experience high definition there’s no going back,” and he’s not kidding. With four times more detail than standard definition images, superior audio capabilities and the option of recording on a much wider choice of formats, HDR is certainly the way forward for amateur filmmakers everywhere.

LG PDP plasma TV

Korean electronics giant LG continues its onslaught on the Gulf with the launch of its latest colossus of a TV set. Having sold 910,000 PDPs globally in the third quarter of 2006, the upgraded 120-inch model looks set to further increase the company’s share of the Middle Eastern market. The PDP has double the resolution of ordinary plasma TVs and boasts an extremely high definition picture with over two million pixels. The set is also supported by clear filter technology that minimizes dullness and eliminates the double image reflection of glass filter TVs.

Price approx: AED 360,000 (US $98,015)

Toshiba Portege M400

As Toshiba’s first notebook with 3G and 3G+ capabilities, the M400 will allow executives to access high-speed internet services which significantly increases upload and download speeds. When the user moves into areas with 3G+ broadband coverage, the network automatically switches to 3G or GPRS. To the computer novice, this basically means that no matter where you are you will never lose touch of critical business data.

Price approx: AED13,590 (US$3700)

O2 XDA Flame

This year could be a big one for European mobile telecoms operator O2. Having launched on these shores in 2006, the company has already gained 85% retail coverage in the region and has its sights firmly set on snatching a significant chunk of the Middle Eastern mobile market. One of the company’s biggest sellers this year could be the Xda Flame, billed as the world’s first dual processor PDA-phone. Incorporating movie playback, photo viewing and high-performance gaming accessed via a large 3.6-inch screen, the flame has all the mod cons to keep you entertained on the go.

Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo Q5000

Although Stephane Rejasse, managing director of Fujitsu-Siemens in the region, told CEO Middle East recently that the days of desktop were numbered, his company is still pushing the boundaries in the office arena. Weighing in at just two kilos, the Q5000 mini PC is the ideal space-saving solution for the executive whose desk is a tangled mess of documents, files, disks (and copies of CEO Middle East of course). The relatively tiny PC combines all the applications of its clunkier cousins including full Intel mobile technology, an integrated DVD drive and 1024 MB of memory.

Price approx: AED5070 (US$1380)

Panasonic AX100E: Projector

While wide-screen TVs continue to get more expansive by the day, there can be no substitute for the cinema-in-the-home experience than a projector. In the past, watching a projected movie during the day would mean that any stray sunlight piercing your blinds would completely spoil your viewing experience. Today however, this problem is a thing of the past, thanks to the AX100E. Complete with a pure colour filter and environmentally responsive light harmoniser, the model allows you to watch your favourite movies in true silver-screen style however bright your room may be.

Price approx: AED9550 (US $2600)

Samsung HT-XQ100

According to Samsung, the 5.1 channel home theatre system will “transform any living room into a fully-functioning digital multimedia entertainment centre” and will awaken your senses. Housing a vertical slot load DVD player that supports a range of playback formats and smooth rounded speakers, the revolutionary system is the complete audio-visual package for the home. The system also allows you and your friends to view digital photos on the big screen instead of huddling around a PC monitor.

Price approx: AED1499 (US$410)
