Contractors are given praise for ‘standards’

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Saturday, 13 January 2007

Wade Adams, Al Futtaim Carillion Tarmac and Gulf Real Estate Consortium (Gresco) have been officially recognised by Dubai Municipality for providing high standards of accommodation for their labourers.

The companies were among those identified as ‘outstanding performers’ in areas that included maintaining high standards of health among their workforce and improving safety standards in the workplace.

Salim bin Mesmar, director of the public health department at Dubai Municipality, said the civic body is committed to working with the private sector to maintain high standards of public health in Dubai.

“These companies have a proven track record in providing their workers and other staff with superb living conditions in terms of space, food, recreational and sanitary facilities,” he said. “Our inspectors have visited their accommodation and found them to be outstanding. By honouring these companies, we encourage other establishments to treat their workers in a dignified way.”

Construction companies were also identified to be performing well in categories such as ‘health and safety in the workplace’ and ‘A-grade’ establishments that have an excellent track record in controlling health hazards related to their activities and developing their staff’s hygiene practices and knowledge.

Other categories included ‘e-services customers’, which recognised companies that had widely used DM’s e-services and made the highest number of online transactions, as well as ‘collaborating enterprises’, which identified contractors that had a clean track record in importing products that fully meet health and safety regulations.
