Free arthritis seminar for UAE patients

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Thursday, 01 February 2007

Regional patients are set to benefit from an open seminar on arthritis, featuring international guest speakers who themselves have the disease.

Hosted under the banner of the Emirates Arthritis Foundation, the seminar aims to help patients to better understand their condition, by equipping them with the latest information and management techniques.

Speakers include Dr Gabriele Brieden, who will discuss ‘What it means to live with arthritis and how to make the best of it’, and Dr Assim Khan, professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. Dr Khan will be giving a lecture entitled, ‘How early diagnosis and treatment can help you beat arthritis’.

The Emirates Arthritis Foundation is led by occupational therapist Kathryn Ronalds. Ronalds, who previously managed a support group with the Canadian Arthritis Foundation, said: “These sessions are a way to empower patients to take an active role in the medical management of their disease.

By teaching self-management techniques, Ronalds says, she hopes to encourage patients to think about their condition “like a business”.

“The mindset is you get the best information, and you make the best decision based on that. You can live a productive life if you have the right advice and intervention.

“Dr Brieden and Dr Khan both know what it means to suffer from arthritis and are keen to help others
suffering from the disease from both a medical as well as personal perspective.”

The seminar will be held on 1st February at the Dusit Dubai. For more information, or to reserve a place, email This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it or call 04 3300444.
