High definition aid for endoscopic imaging

Olympus is to use Sony’s PDW-70MD to record images captured by the EVIS EXERA II, its new high definition endoscopic imaging system.
According to Sony, the move combines the world’s only medical device directive (MDD)-compliant 1080i HD medical recorder with the first true 1080i HD endoscopic system. The integration of the two creates the first ever end-to-end HD endoscopic workflow.
“Sony believes that high definition represents the future of diagnostic and surgical imaging,” said David Dowe, director of Sony Healthcare Europe. “There is a clinical need for the dramatic increase in image clarity that HD provides. This deal signifies a complete shift change: medical practitioners are demanding the benefits of HD and we are responding to that challenge.”
The PDW-70MD uses industry-standard MPEG-2 video compression. The recorder can store up to two hours of HD video on a single disc. Similar to the consumer Blu-ray format, it has been adapted for professional use and delivers faster read/write speed and neutral formatting. It is housed in a ruggedised polycarbonate casing for shock and dust protection.
“Like Sony, we recognise the enormous benefit for doctors and patients of HD imaging and as such the EXERA II represents the highest standard of endoscopic imaging in the world,” said Frank Drewalowski, general manager, Olympus Medical Systems Europa GmbH. “As the world’s only MDD-compliant 1080i HD medical recorder, the Sony PDW-70MD provides the image clarity that Olympus demands.”
