Companies must support training efforts

As we come closer to the biggest regional show for the broadcast and production industry, it is time for us to review one issue very seriously - Training. All over Europe and the US, it is not unusual to see weekly training seminars being organised by vendors, systems integrators and training partners for industry professionals.

For professionals, it is the perfect way to keep themselves informed about what's available in the region, and also to network with the rest of the community.

There have been quite a few efforts in this direction recently although most have been geared towards educating people about specific vendor products.

Recently, we saw a lighting seminar from Martin Professional with focus only on products from Martin and Arri. Stefan Weiss, the developer of a new high-speed camera came down to Dubai recently to train a few DoPs on how to use his camera. Harris recently held a two-day seminar to familiarise its clients with Digital Media Asset management and also gave its clients hands-on training on some of its products.

While it is good to familiarise people in the region with new products and keep them informed about what's newly available in the market, we also hope there will be more efforts to support workshops that pass on specialised skills to local players.

For instance, we hear that the Sachtler Academy, which is known in Europe for training people in lighting, will consider holding something similar in Dubai, in partnership with UBMS.

The Academy, which plans to come to CABSAT this year, intends to carry out a survey to see if there will be any interest for such training, and if there is, in what specific areas. We hope more companies will come forward to support such efforts to upgrade local skills.
