High-tech hacking conference comes again to Middle East

Hands-on security conference Hack In The Box (HITB) will come to Dubai in April, and will include technical training sessions and talks from security researchers including Mikko Hypponen (pictured) of F-Secure.

This will be the second time in the region for HITB - the conference visited Bahrain in 2005. The event will include extensive technical training across four different tracks of network security issues, as well as presentations from security professionals.

HITB will also feature a ‘Capture the Flag' (CTF) competition, where teams or individuals attempt to hack into servers to retrieve certain marked files.

"We are honoured to be able to bring these experts to the Middle East to share their experience and knowledge with the public," said Dhillon Andrew Kannabhiran, founder and CEO of HITB.

"This is indeed a rare opportunity for attendees to meet and hear first-hand from some of the leading minds in the field of computer security," he added.

In addition to F-Secure's Hypponen, HITB will also feature a keynote speech from Lance Spitzner, founder of the HoneyNet research project, a key figure in the development of honeypot research to track hackers.

"Honeypots are a powerful but misunderstood technology; almost everyone has benefited from honeypot use, but few may realise it," said Spitzner.

"In my keynote I will give attendees a look at the history, evolution and use of honeypots over the last 10 years, I will also focus on the state of honeypot technology today, and where they will go in the future," added Spitzner.

Hypponen's keynote address will look at ‘Online crime and crime online', examining the subject of criminal gangs working online. Hypponen has advised organisations including the FBI in the USA, London's Metropolitan Police, and major international vendors such as IBM and Microsoft.

"In my presentation I will be going behind the scenes to show who's really responsible for the network attacks, who's launching the phishing scams, who runs the botnets and who's making all the money," Hypponen said.

The technical training sessions will cover topics such as: advanced web application security; tactical VoIP: applied VoIPhreaking; structured network threat analysis and forensics; and packetmastering the monkey way.
