Abu Dhabi gets US $680m camp

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Saturday, 24 February 2007
HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of the UAE, has ordered the construction of these cities to promote good living conditions.

Abu Dhabi will soon have three new residential cities for construction labourers, which will cost US $680 million (AED2.5 billion) to build.

The new cities will have the capacity to accommodate up to 200,000 labourers working on construction projects in the city and will be located in Al Mafraq area. The first phase will be ready by the end of this year and the last phase will be completed in 2008.

Zonescorp, which is the body responsible for overseeing the project, has already awarded eight contracts to various developers for the construction of these cities.

According to instructions by HH Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the first phase of these cities will be allocated to accommodate 100 ,000 workers. Seventy thousand of them are workers who are currently living in the old residential complex in the City of Mohammad bin Zayed.

Engineer Jaber Hareb Al Khaili, acting CEO of Zonescorp, explained that all safety and security measures would be available in the cities.

"Zonescorp looks at these residential projects as non-profit services," he said.

"Accordingly, rent value for investors and entrepreneurs from the private sector will be very reasonable as that will help them to be more productive."

He also said that a well-reputed international firm has been appointed to manage the construction of these cities.

In addition, two more residential cities that will accommodate an additional 100,000 construction workers will be constructed in Al Ain.
