Dubai hotels go cheap 'n' Easy

Stelios will unveil deal on Sunday.

Cut price airline tycoon Stelios Haji-Iannou will unveil a range of budget hotels for the region this Sunday, ArabianBusiness.com can reveal.

The founder of easyJet has tied up with Istithmar Hotels for the venture, which will provide the first wide range of low cost hotels in Dubai. Sources suggest that the new hotels will be on the outskirts of the emirate, and if successful, will be expanded into Bahrain, Kuwait and Doha.

"We're hoping that some rooms could be going for just US$30 a night. The idea is that the pricing will be done on a supply and demand basis, and you will only be able to book online," says a source close to Haji-Iannou, adding: "Dubai has some fabulous attractions and what we are hoping is that visitor who want to spend their money on some of these rather than purely on five star resort style accommodation will come to us."

The Greek entrepreneur is credited with revolutionizing the airline industry in the UK with his no frills carrier easyJet. He has since gone on to launch hugely successful low price ventures in car rentals, the internet and cinemas.

I don't think setting up cheap hotels on the outskirts of Dubai will solve the problem, considering the traffic woes. If a traveller will save on hotel, he would spend more on travel and most importantly his time. What Dubai needs is British type B&B accommodations, which are affordable and centrally located.

I can't agree that all Stelios' ventures have been 'highly successful'. I believe he lost money on the internet cafe and cinema ventures. Neither did he revolutionise air travel in the UK on his own, there were others of equal or greater significance. That is not to take anything away from him.
