PC lab for the blind opens

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Thursday, 22 February 2007

Bahrain Islamic Bank (BisB) has launched a voice aided computer lab to help blind students access the internet.

The lab has been established in the Saudi Bahraini Institute for the Blind (SBIB) and will allow students with no or impaired eyesight to use PCs and go online without help from others.

The lab includes eight computers equipped with printers and special voice software, allowing them to listen to web sites. The software enables the translation of the material from written text into audio.

Yousif Saleh Khalaf, BisB CEO, commented: "We are pleased today with the opening of this computer lab which is the fruit of a series of donations contributed by BIsB for various purposes and causes in the Kingdom."

SBIB was the first institution of its kind in Bahrain and has been active in the Kingdom for the last 32 years.

It provides a range of courses for sight-impaired students, using the most advanced technology available.
