Oneworld expands international membership

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Thursday, 01 March 2007
Oneworld membership: Japan Airlines, Malév Hungarian Airlines and Royal Jordanian Airlines join the global alliance.

Oneworld has revealed its biggest expansion to date, with three new airlines joining the international alliance from April 2007.

Japan Airlines (JAL), Malév Hungarian Airlines and Royal Jordanian Airlines will start offering Oneworld services next month, allowing customers to earn mileage awards and gain access to 400 airport lounges around the world.

"Adding Japan Airlines, Malév and Royal Jordanian represents Oneworld's biggest expansion since the alliance was launched eight years ago," said John McCulloch, managing partner, Oneworld.

"Their addition will broaden our network coverage in three of the fastest growing regions for air travel and further strengthen Oneworld's position," he added.

The three airlines are currently undergoing employee training and communication programmes to ensure their staff throughout the world are ready to provide Oneworld services.

"Membership of Oneworld will enable our airline to offer customers greater access to a substantially more diverse network of destinations, with the help of our excellent stable of partners," said Samer Majali, chief executive, Royal Jordanian. "Through RJ's own wide-ranging regional network, we will provide the other Oneworld airlines with markedly increased reach in the fast growing Middle East."

Japan Airlines (JAL), Malév Hungarian Airlines and Royal Jordanian Airlines will be Oneworld's first new recruits for more than six years.

Three additional carriers are also expected to join the alliance this year - Dragonair, LAN Argentina and LAN Ecuador - all as affiliate members.
