Self-styled ‘serial entrepreneur’ Stelios Haji-Ioannou, reveals this week that he is to donate the bulk of his US$1.5bn fortune to charity and environmental work. In so doing, he will join Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in the pantheon of mega-philanthropists, and undoubtedly make a real difference in whichever fields he decides to deploy his resources.
“Because I started easyJet many people have asked me what it feels like to be helping destroy the planet,” he says.
“So I suppose this is a good way to answer that.”
Such candour is refreshing from a businessman who, among other achievements, single-handedly launched Europe’s now thriving low-cost airline industry.
Others were quick to imitate easyJet, and they made a lot of money very quickly. Let us hope that they are similarly quick to imitate Stelios’ latest venture.
