Biofuel cars may launch in UAE

Adnoc Distribution is in talks to bring biofuel vehicles that run on both natural gas and petrol to the UAE, according to a Gulf News report today.
The retail arm of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) has approached biofuel car manufacturers to urge them to supply the environmentally friendly car models to the Emirates.
Jamal Al Zareef, the firm's GM, told Gulf News the move comes as part of its decision to expand its Natural Gas for Vehicles (NGV) programme throughout Abu Dhabi, before expanding into Sharjah and Fujairah and then the entire country.
He added that the decision is "in line with the decision by the emirate's Executive Council to expand the use of natural gas as an alternative fuel for vehicles."
In the initial phase, Adnoc Distribution will set up about 10 filling stations to offer NGV services in Abu Dhabi.
Natural gas-powered vehicles that run on both natural gas and petrol allow drivers to drive an additional 250 to 450 km - apart from the range covered through the petrol – and allow drivers to switch over from natural gas to petrol while driving. Their recent popularity comes from the fact that NGVs have a lower pollutant emissions rate making them cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
Other UAE companies are also in a drive for cleaner road and vehicles.
Electric cars may soon be heading to Abu Dhabi if negotiations between investment company Mubadala and the Baynuna Group go as planned, as ArabianBusiness.com reported last month. A deal signed with French company Dassault will export 10,000 advanced electric cars that operate on clean power with a speed of 160 km/h to the emirate.
The news comes as the UAE is under fire for its environmental record. Last month the UN warned the UAE for its rising pollution problem, saying the country must do more to protect the environment or face an escalating number of pollution-related illnesses.
