Government projects worth almost US $5.3 billion (BD 2 billion) have been awarded by the Bahrain Tender Board in the last four years.

Since its creation in January 2003, the board has awarded 5,653 tenders.

The value of tenders awarded in 2006 increased 12% to $1.7 billion, reflecting an increased investment in public sector projects including roads, bridges, water and electricity infrastructure, housing and building renovation.

One of those contracts was the $196.3 million deal to build the Sitra Causeway bridges, which was won by Malaysia's Gamuda.

The total of 5,653 tenders awarded since 2003 received more than 30,000 bids, Dr Mirza told the GDN.

The Bahrain Tender Board took strides last year to strengthen its adher nce to international operating standards and management best practice and was awarded the IS0 9001:2000 accreditation, which stipulates rules for government tenders and purchases.

The board has also made moves towards introducing an e-tendering system to manage all tenders and government purchases online as well as improved communication with all contractors and suppliers.

Dr Abdul Hussein Mirza, chairman of the Bahrain Tender Board, said the developments over the last few years have strengthened the board's reputation for transparency, integrity and fair competition as well as instilled confidence in foreign investors.
