UAE gets its first coffee roastery

Orbis Roastery has opened its first specialty roastery in the emirates. Located in Al Lahbab on the Dubai-Hatta road, the company imports green beans from across the globe, and offers single bean varieties and blends rather than importing roasted blends from countries such as Italy and the USA.

"We realised there was a gap in the market as nobody was roasting high quality beans here," commented Francis Falconer, general manger, Orbis Roastery.

Offering small batches of 1.5kg over a 45-minute slow roast, Falconer added that the beans are also blended after roasting to improve quality.

Operating from its facility in Dubai, the company is open to the public for private tasting sessions, followed by blends created specially for each individual, who can then re-order the same blend.

"This is unique to Dubai, and as far as we know, there is no other roastery where an individual can create their own unique blend. Once the blend has been created, we can even have the beans sent to them worldwide," added Falconer.

The company also offers Kopi Luwak coffee, which typically retails at more than AED8000 (US $2179) per kg.
