Bahrain WTC wind turbine installation completed
by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Sunday, 01 April 2007
Installation of the wind turbine blades on the Bahrain World Trade Centre (BWTC) in Manama has been completed.
This follows over three years of intensive research and development by architects and engineers from global firm Atkins and its Danish partner Ramboll and Norwin.
This is the first building in the world to incorporate large-scale integrated wind turbines. Three wind turbines are horizontally supported between the two 50-storey sail-shaped officetowers by three bridges that each weigh 65-tonnes. The 29-metre diameter turbine blades are expected to create 11-15% of the energy requirements for the BWTC development.
The BWTC forms the focal point of a masterplan to rejuvenate an existing hotel and shopping mall in the central business district of Manama.
