Airport lounges can ease some of the pain of travelling, and Bahrain's Dilmun Lounge has been voted the best in the Middle East and Africa region for 2010.

The SUMAQ VIP lounge of Lima's international airport has been voted the world's best for 2010 by independent airport lounge programme Priority Pass.

Priority Pass, the world's biggest membership program that gives frequent travelers access to airport lounges regardless of their class of travel or which airline they've flown, asked more than 30,000 passengers from all over the world to pick their favorite lounge from among a 600-strong list.

The lounge at Peru's Jorge Chavez International Airport came up tops, reclaiming its 2009 position, with travellers praising its business facilities and relaxation rooms that have blankets, pillows and showers.

"The awards reflect truly exemplary service standards from the SUMAQ VIP Lounge and our other award winners," Jonathan French, head of brand at Priority Pass, said in a statement.

By region, Continental Presidents Club, Terminal E, Houston, Texas, was voted the best lounge in North America and Zurich's Panorama Lounge the best in Europe.

In the Asia Pacific, KAL Lounge, Concourse A, in Seoul's Incheon Airport was in first place. (Reuters)

Perhaps the award giver in question doesn't get applications from the other airports because they don't deem the award as being one worth winning! Just a thought. Congrats to Bahrain

I have had the pleasure of visiting the Dilmun Lounge on weekly basses for past six month, yes it is very good ? as for being the best in the region is another question, no doubt it is up there on top of the group. My self personally feel that Emirates business class is hard to beat they have considered even us the smokers and provided a section for us the undesirables, the lounge is spacious has all the amenities on can imagine and it is very peaceful, personally I find Emirates staff most obliging and friendly. Personally I would vote Emirates Dubai as finest lounge available anywhere

Congrats to the Dilmun Lounge but it doesn't say much for the standards of airport lounges in the region if this has been voted the best (perhaps the Dilmun Lounge was more proactive in handing out voting forms?). Although perfectly pleasant it is nothing special - the food selection is limited, it has a very linear configuration and there is no separate area for children - I find the Gulf Air lounge at Bahrain airport far superior. I wholeheartedly agree with Jon's comment about the new Emirates Lounge. Given the investment DNATA has made in the new terminal, they have really missed a trick here. It's poorly laid out, has little seating for those not eating (bearing in mind the number of people who transit via DXB), and, as Jon points out, is noisy. In my experience, the Virgin lounge at Heathrow T3 has set the standard that lounges in the Middle East have yet to reach. Having said all of this, I am grateful that I get the opportunity to use lounges at all....

I would agree that the Dilmun Lounge is very good - whether it is the best in the region is another matter, but it is certainly close to the top of the pile. One of the reasons has to be what other's have mentioned - it is very peaceful, welcoming and relaxing. Sadly, the opposite of Emirates' loounge in Dubai which has more of the feel of a train station waiting room given there is no noise separation from the rest of the airport.

@ John After any time spent passing through Riyadh Airport, almost ANYTHING is welcoming - and on the end of a month in Riyadh... :) Riyadh does have some very nice spots...erm...ok...the list is fairly short I admit, but I used to like the Al Khozama Hotel...no alcohol of course, but still.. Actually G. Claymore is quite right in a way - the fact is that these polls are not accurate for the simple reason that most people, if they are ambivalent about a place will not bother to fill out a poll, its only if they really like it or hate it that they will bother - so for the most part I really think they can only be used to indicate that a place may be acceptable or not. When living in Singapore, I used to be offended that Schiphol Airport was regularly voted as the worlds best, and that Changi did not always win - especially after visiting Schiphol - it was pleasant on the one hand, but badly set up in comparison to Changi... horses for courses...!
