We’re digging the robots at this year’s Gitex, so here’s some pics of another one for you.

This is Titan the Robot, who has been impressing visitors to the technology show with his dance moves.

Apparently the eight foot high animatronic robot can also talk, sing, and even cry.

“Nobody at will have seen anything like Titan the Robot before,” said Nik Fielding his creator. “We are delighted to bring our show to Dubai and look forward to adding a totally new element to Gitex.”

We like.

Here is a picture of Ibn Sina, who according to his makers, is the world’s first Arabic-speaking human-like humanoid robot.arabicrobot

He’s a new type of robot that uses face recognition software, vision, speech solutions and other technologies, to help him better interact with people, and is on show at Gitex.

Ibn Sina has been created by the Interactive Robots and Media Lab (IRML) of the United Arab Emirates University, and apparently can speak English as well as remember what he’s done in the past.

“At the IRML, a major development is taking place: robots that can have shared memories and shared friends with humans are being created; promising more interesting encounters, and a sustainable and long-lasting friendly relationship between humans and robots!’ Dr Nikolaos Mavridis, director of the IRML said in a press release issued today.

Now, we’re not doubting Ibn Sina’s vocal capabilities, but hang on a minute, he looks like he’s escaped from Madam Tussauds waxwork in London. Hmm, maybe that’s where he learned English…

Listen to what Ibn Sina sounds like, click HERE for sample one and HERE for sample two.

This year’s Oil Barons Ball is aiming to raise AED500,000 for the Friends of Cancer Patients charity. No mean feat, but considering some of the prizes available it’s quite possible.

Apparently 2,500 guests are expected to attend this year, who can bid for lots like a football shirt signed by the Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, an Australian pearl necklace set in 18ct white gold and finished with diamonds, a golf lesson with PGA amateur and celebrity golf tutor Claude Harmon, and a set of limited edition golf clubs from Nike as used by Tiger Woods.

All the money raised on the night goes towards FOCP, a great charity which aims to provide emotional and financial support to cancer sufferers and their families.

Organisers say the ball, now in its seventh year, will also have performances from tribute bands, the Four Tops and Dream Girls, flown in for the night from London’s West End.

No wonder it’s the oil industry’s biggest shindig of the year. The highlight of the evening, however, is the crowning of the Oil Baron – the person who’s made the biggest contribution to the sector in the past 12 months. Who will that be, we wonder? Post your suggestions below.

We like the story today in the National today that Abu Dhabi police have built the world’s fastest police car.

Not wanting to be left out of the Grand Prix fever gripping the capital, the cops built their very own F1 car, aptly named F999.

It can travel at 400kph and has been kitted out with flashing lights, sirens and a police radio and will be unveiled to the public on October 28 at Abu Dhabi Corniche.

It’s a shame it’s just for show and will never make it on to the city’s streets. The police could do with it to keep up with speeding drivers.
